Parbon desk:

The gas reserves are almost at their end, if they continue this way, the gas will collapse in a few years. Then the profitable sectors will be closed. The government has taken a decision after considering and examining everything.
State Minister for Power Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said that LPG is being encouraged instead of pipeline gas at home.
He said there were no plans to provide gas connections for domestic use in residential areas. Gas connection to the residential has been halted due to the best use of natural gas and the availability of alternative fuels.

State Minister for Power and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hameed said that there are currently 1.2 million domestic connections under six gas companies. Until last October, 2 lakh 3 thousand 5 pre-paid meters have been installed under Titas and Karnaphuli gas companies. As a result, 4% of residential customers come under pre-paid meters. Responding to a question from the ruling party member AKM Rahmatullah, he said that gas shortages are being met by importing LNG from abroad at high prices. As a result, the government's revenue has increased due to stopping new gas connections in the residential sector, giving priority to gas connections in economically viable sectors (industrial, fertilizer and economic zones). At the same time it is contributing to achieving economic growth, including employment growth.

Responding to the question of the parliament, the government said that the government has to take this decision as there is no new gas currently being discovered. However, BAPEX has been trying to find gas mining, the government will look into any new fields.
In reply to the supplementary question of Awami League Mohibul Haque Manik, Nasrul Hamid said, the lines of Dhaka city are very old. The government that was before us did not repair the lines, so there is no proper gas in many lines. The present government has allocated Tk 1,220 crore for renovation of these old lines. He hoped that Dhaka would get uninterrupted gas supply soon after the tender work would start.
